How to find a used car that suits your budget and isn’t a lemon!

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Wow. One of my ‘most discouraging moments’ comes when the car gives up the ghost and I’ve got to find a used car to replace the old one. I’ve had a bit of experience in this area, so I’d like to pass on what I’ve learned to you. The last thing you want to do is fork over hard-earned cash for a used car that turns out to be nothing but trouble! Here are the steps and strategies I follow to find a used car that’s reliable and fits my budget.

1.Unless your car is completely trashed and worth nothing, sell it for what you can. Don’t try to play fancy games with ads stating things like, “new paint, needs tires”, when actually what it needs is a new engine. You’re just wasting your time and slowing down the process of finding a replacement vehicle. (I’ve not actually placed ads like that myself, but have answered a number of them!)

2.If your car is beyond redemption, within the confines of your own budget, consider donating it to an organization which will do whatever repairs are required and then sell it themselves. You’ll at least get a tax deduction.

3.While pursuing steps 1 and 2, go over your budget and see what you can afford. If you have a savings account sufficient to find a used car for which you can pay cash, this might be a good move. While you don’t want to deplete your savings, paying $1500 cash for a used car gives you more negotiating power. Cash talks. The classifieds are full of older cars in this price range, some of which may be a one-owner, well maintained vehicle, driven by a little old lady who no longer uses her car.

4.If you need to find a used car that’s a later model and will need to finance most of it, it becomes a little more complicated. Banks will not finance a car that’s older than 9 years and usually require a down payment. Check with your bank and see what their loan requirements are. Then go through the classifieds with those parameters in mind. Find out what your insurance will be and work this sum into your budget as well.

5.Whether you pay cash or finance, the classifieds are where you’re most likely to find a used car at the best price. Used car lots buy low and sell high.

6.When you find a used car that seems to fill the bill, never fork over any money, except perhaps a refundable deposit, until you’ve had your mechanic look the car over. If he or she gives you a thumbs up, you’re good to go.

Using these tips as a guideline, you should be able to find a used car that you can afford and which is reliable. Good luck.

Buying Gap Insurance – don’t buy from a BMW dealer!

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Most people would want to buy their BMW from a reputable main dealer. That’s fine, but beware of the high cost of supplementary products such as gap insurance.

If you are lucky enough to own a BMW you should seriously consider a gap insurance policy if you want to protect your financial investement. The question is where should you purchase your policy?

What if your BMW is written off?

Unlike motor insurance, there is no need to use a broker or spend hours comparing insurance quotes as there are now several very reputable online providers such as www.Click4Gap.co.uk and ALA.co.uk. Both are specialists in this type of insurance and offer cover for all but the most expensive of BMW’s.

In fact that this would be against the law, a regular motor policy will only provide cover up to the value of your vehicle, as determined by your motor insurer!

Invariably, if your vehicle is involved in a major accident, or is stolen and subsequently written off, you will only receive the current market value for your vehicle at the time of the claim. For example, a BMW 320 D SE costing 29570 new in 2008, now has a book value of 16200. That’s a potential loss of 13370.

A recent survey of policy costs at franchised BMW Dealers revealed a shocking tale of exorbitant pricing. Many are charging over 500 for a basic policy, with some BMW dealers charging as much as 821 for gap insurance cover.

Online providers however will provide the same policy for more than half the cost!

Before you take out BMW gap insurance policy make sure you do your price research!

Car Care Tip – Read The Manual

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

The granddaddy of all car care tips, would be to read the manual thoroughly and then stay in compliance with the maintenance schedule. Now this would seem pretty obvious, and barely worth mentioning; but people just can’t seem to believe that what they can’t see under the hood could actually matter at all. To begin with, not following the maintenance schedule can void the warranty on your car when it’s new. If you need a little help with your maintenance schedule, try the maintenance feature on Edmunds.com that will map out all the maintenance milestones for your model of car, and tell you what it should cost. Remember, if you happen to like to use your car for towing purposes, for driving through dusty off-road routes, or for driving in really cold climate, you need to follow the severe use maintenance schedule they publish, which typically requires that you bring it in once every 3000 miles. It would help if you set aside $1000 each year for this.

Mercedes-Benz is now offering special editions of the SL and SLK, both of which feature a stylish interior with numerous sophisticated highlights. The standard designo magno night black matt paint finish accentuates the exclusive, sporty appearance of the SL Night Edition, while the special designo graphite paint finish makes the SLK Grand Edition a real eye-catcher. Both of these new special models combine the advantages of a roadster with those of a coupé, and are both thoroughbred sports cars and comfortable everyday cars.

“These exciting new additions to the model range will be offered in limited numbers. These roadsters will give sporty drivers, who have a preference for individuality, the opportunity of exclusivity,” says Eckart Mayer, Divisional Manager, Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Masterpieces to dream of: the theme for the two new special editions of the Mercedes-Benz SL and SLK sports car series. The newly designed seats have arrow-shaped seams and silver-coloured contrasting features. The sports steering wheel, shift lever and roof lining are in black. The trim strip of the draught-stop has a high-gloss finish complemented by the silver-coloured vents of the AIRSCARF® system, which bathes the driver in warm air when the soft top is down in cool ambient temperatures. Car Care Tips For A Longer Lasting Vehicle

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

If you want your car to last longer, you have to take care of it. You may know someone who has had the same car for twenty years and it is still looking and running great. You may also know someone that bought a new car just a few years ago and they are always having to take it in for repairs. There are reasons why these things happen, and though the make and model of the vehicle come into play, it is more about how the owner treats the car in question. Use some car care tips so that you can be one of those people that has a great running car for a long time to come – without the repair bills to show for it.

Car care tips range from how to take good care of your interior fabrics to how to ensure your gas mileage does not go down because you are not caring for the engine in the right way. Some things are hard to do and others are rather easy. It is just a matter of knowing a bit about your car and then applying common sense to the most important issues at hand. You may get car care tips that work well and some that do not mean much, but you can figure this out on your own. Your owner’s manual can set you straight when you are not sure what you should be doing.

If you are looking for car care tips for the interior of the car, these are things that you probably know already or can figure out on your own. One of the worst things that you can do to the interior of a car or truck is to smoke in it. You are free to do what you want, but remember that it will be impossible to get that smell out of the fabric if you wish to sell one day, and that tar will build up on the interior quickly – making it necessary to clean windows and other hard surfaces often.

Car care tips for the engine would include keeping the oil changed and topped off. Oil makes your engine run smoothly, and if you have oil, broken down oil or you do not have enough, important parts of your engine are going to grind. This means more repairs or the loss of the engine entirely. You should also make sure you have all other fluids topped off when needed. If you find that your car is harder to steer, you may have run down your power steering fluid. Watch things like the transmission fluid and learn about why each is important for the life of your car or truck.

Don’t forget important car care tips like making sure your tires are in good shape and have the right amount of air in them. This can mean the difference between a smooth ride with good gas mileage and a bumpy ride with poor mileage. If your windshield cracks, get it fixed right away. Also, remember that your car needs to be cleaned often, as some things that cling to they body can eat through the paint rather quickly. You may find more car care tips in your owners manual, so look there for advice before you have to look there for a quick fix on a problem you could have avoided.

Common Car Care Products

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Your car is an investment. You may do well with it when you first get it, keeping it clean inside and out and making sure the engine is working as best as it can. However, as time goes on, you may slack off on a few things and that can mean your car does not last as long as it should, and may even mean that your gas mileage gets worse than it should be. If you think hard about good car care products and take some time out just once a week, you can keep your car in great condition both on the surface and in the engine where it really counts.

One of the most important car care products that you can have on hand at all times in motor oil. You should have this changed every 3000 miles, but it is a good idea to have some with you when you travel or even when you drive to work. Keep a few quarts in your trunk for easy access. You should check it once a week when getting gas to be sure you have enough in there. If it is not yet time for your oil change, you can add what you need and you do not have to worry about damage to your engine in the meantime.

Along the same lines, there are other car care products that you should always have with you in your truck or other storage area in your vehicle of choice. You should always have windshield washing fluid with you. This does not really keep your car running well, but it makes sure that you can see while driving – which is of utmost importance as you know. You should also have transmission fluid and power steering fluid as well. You may not need them often, but it will be nice to know you have these car care products when you need them. A gas treatment product can be used once in a while as well.

When it comes to the exterior of your car, your car care products are going to be about how good you want your car to look, but also about the longevity of your frame and body. If you live where there is a lot of snow and ice in the winter, you drive over salt all of the time. When you do that, that salt clings to your car and eats away at the paint first and then the metal on your car. You want to have car care products for keeping the salt off of your car. You may have to clean it often in the winter, but do not put that off because it is rather hard. See about undercoating for your car, but visit the car wash often.

Other car car products may include things to keep your wheels and tires shiny and clean. You may want to have something to clean your dash, and a window cleaner for your windows is a must. You should keep your fabrics clean, and that can usually be done with a vacuum. However, accidents may happen, so a good fabric cleaner may be in order. Floor mats can take away some of the wear and tear of people getting in and out of your car – though you may not think of them as car care products – making them a great idea.

How to buy a used car

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

When planning to purchase a car, you definitely want to get the cheapest deal at the highest quality. In fact, when buying used cars, it is possible to get a car for half its original price or even for much less. The problem usually comes with the likelihood of the used car not being in good condition. Since a car’s value decreases with age, use and mileage, it is understandable to be concerned and a bit apprehensive when the deal seems to be too good. So what are some things to look at before buying used cars to avoid a rip off?

The first thing to consider is your pocket. How much are you willing to spend on a car? To get a good idea of the cars that fall within your price range, take a look at newspaper ads. Banks and loan institutions will usually have monthly listing guides of used cars. Consult these and see how far your wallet can stretch. Remember also that buying used cars will come with unexpected repairs as well as taxes, insurance and registration fees. Be sure to factor in these extra expenses before buying.

When buying used cars, it is best to avoid cars that have extremely high mileage. This is because as the car ages, it will need more repairs. The repairs that go into a used do not necessarily add to the value of the car. Ordinarily, it is less expensive to go for a used car in good shape than to take a bad car and fix it up, even if its price is much lower. So how do you find out if a used car is good enough to buy? Check the car thoroughly before buying. Look at the interior and exterior of the car. Have they been maintained well? What do the maintenance records show about the car? If they do not exist, likely the car has been neglected.

Before buying used cars, be sure to take a test drive. Drive in a variety of terrains and take note of the engine. Are there noises in the engine? Is there enough power for a good acceleration? If the owner of the car says that the engine just needs a tune-up, be wary. Tune-ups are a regular part of the car maintenance and should have been done often. What about the transmission? Does it shift smoothly? Are there grinding noises in the gears? All these are warning signs of a worn out engine. Other things to look at include the engine oil, the automatic transmission fluid and the brakes and suspension. Be sure to have a professional mechanic take a look at the car. While this may cost you a few extra dollars, it can save you hundreds of dollars of needed repairs in the future.

The Secret of the Cheap Automotive Lease

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

To pick up a pleasant modern Camry, Malibu or Altima at $499 a month is terribly tempting; there is one thing about the price that nobody be able to refrain from. There was even a latest assessment within the New York Occasions of a Honda Accord that went for a $199 a month (with additional money for the upfront fee, tax and license). It attracted applicable sighs of longing and skepticism too. So is there something about the scenario to not really feel great about? Well, there is nothing at all, if your credit standing pretty sparkles (and if there was a bank card invoice you accidentally paid a day late ten months in the past, you might before now be out of the working). You would not be eligible for a charmingly low cost car lease provide otherwise. That is a substantial amount of course; but how do you go into that dealership and come out with a car you need, and never a brushoff?

The entire car lease thought has been in hibernation for a few years nowadays. When gasoline prices rose to four dollars a gallon, droves of people terminated the leases on SUVs, and straight away the automotive makers discovered themselves stuck with fleets of used SUVs with no market evaluate. They have been so surprised by this whole misfortune that they swore off leasing altogether; till now, that is. Acquiring a lease though is not going to be as easy as it was to any further extent. You do not simply show up with proof of what you made over the past three months and catch your automotive lease. The automakers are placing out car leases once more in the marketplace; however they’re extraordinarily cautious over whom they will give the lease to. It is this type of cautious scrutiny for a guaranteed reliable buyer that makes a $199 automotive lease viable.

Another excuse this is attainable is that individuals are shopping for extra used automobiles now than new ones. When used cars are costly, it makes decline on new vehicles really small; if the decline every year is very small, they only have to take a little payment from you to cowl it – that’s the $199 you pay. And finally, there is the actual cause why they let you drive it off for $199. The lease contract estimates that you’ll drive little or no – about 12,000 miles each year for 3 years. You will need to pay a higher mileage allowance after that. And naturally, do not forget that you don’t own this automotive; at the finish of three years, you’d better be willing to drive the automobile back to the dealership, and just walk off. If you purchased the automotive, you’ll have an asset

Going as much as the supplier to get yourself a brand new automotive lease, it could be troublesome to truly stroll away if the deal doesn’t materialize, It’s easy to contemplate paying extra for a automobile with more options, a bigger engine, and a poorer deal. You need to perceive that the best hand you hold in a automobile negotiation is that you may resist the gross sales pitch, and stroll away. You’re there to do your self a favor, not one for the dealer. There are many certified pre-owned autos in the marketplace; you may get higher financing for old automobiles too, because the manufacturers who preserve shares of worn cars are anxious to let them go away. And these are better offers than inking a car lease any day.

Benefits of Hybrid Electric Cars

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

I’m in the market for a new car, which means I’ve been spending a lot of time researching possible choices in my budget range. I’m not really sure what kind of vehicle I want yet, but am leaning towards hybrid electric cars because of all the extra benefits they provide owners. There used to be a time when the Toyota Prius was the only one on the road, but now there are a bunch of hybrids to choose from. As a result, I’ll have to compare and contrast features, check for dealer rebates and discounts, and read consumer and professional reviews about each make and model prior to purchasing. Obviously, this will take a long while. In the meantime, I want to go over some of the advantages of hybrid electric cars to further convince myself that this is what I should buy.

The first thing that comes to mind when talking about hybrids is fuel economy. These vehicles use a combination of a typical gasoline engine and a motor charged by on-board batteries. The battery-powered motor is engaged when driving at slower speeds, such as the stop-and-go movements associated with navigating through heavy traffic. When traveling at higher speeds, the gasoline engine takes over. In this way, hybrid electric cars yield amazing gas and mileage savings for owners. In fact, most people report having to refuel their vehicles after 400 or 600 miles, which is absolutely incredible these days.

Another benefit of driving hybrid electric cars and SUVs is that they are environmentally friendly. These vehicles do not produce the same amount of carbon dioxide emissions or noise pollution as their gasoline-only counterparts, which of course reduces their negative impact on the environment. The green movement is very popular in society today, as well it should be. Now there’s a way for all of us to drive without having to feel guilty about what we’re doing to air quality. I don’t know about you, but I definitely prefer driving to depending on inconsistent bus or train service!

A third benefit of driving hybrid electric cars is that the purchase can qualify for some tax credits. That’s true as of the date of this writing, at any rate. For example, buying a Ford Fusion or Mercury Milan results in $3,400 worth of tax credits, while a Ford Escape or Mazda Tribute can yield an extra $3,000 in savings. Just be aware that these credits usually come with an expiration date, and vary from model to model, so you’ll have to check with your dealer before buying just to make sure the savings are still available.

Overall, the advantages of driving hybrid electric cars definitely outweigh some of the initial concerns, which include higher sticker price and repair fees should something break down. I think I’ve pretty much convinced myself that this is the kind of vehicle I’m going to buy next. Now I just have to settle on a particular make and model and go from there!

Choosing a car based on Latch

Friday, August 6th, 2010

When my wife and I were ready to have our first baby, we decided we needed a new reliable car. The best feature of any baby safe car is the latch system. These are basically strong latching loops that are bolted into the seats securely so you can clip the car seat to them. No more relying on seat belts that can snap of be improperly used. The best car seat I found was the Britax Duo line of seats.

Now for the car we decided on a 4 cylinder Saturn Vue with a vti transmission. We figured this would be easu on gas with a claimed 22 mpg. Well it gets 16mpg and thats as good as it gets with a tailwind. It is noisey, parts have fallen off and Saturn would never do anything about it. There is no wonder they went out of business.

7 Tips on Purchasing the Best Preowned Cars

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Purchasing preowned cars is today turning out as the best car buying deals available in the market. From the outset, preowned cars are desirable to those individuals who want a perfect condition vehicle at a bargain price. These cars are almost as good as brand new ones and yet are sold at the subset of the asking price a new car has. The following tips can help you buy the best preowned car in the market at the most attractive bargain price possible.

The first thing you need to realize is that you can own even the most expensive cars in the market, at pristine condition, at the price of any ordinary, below par vehicle. As such pre-owned cars come as a great alternative to you when you want a better car than you can afford as a brand new. A good example is when you opt to buy a preowned Camry at the same price of a brand new Corolla.

Second, you ought to realize that cars are assets. However this is the kind of asset that depreciates with use (mileage) and age. The depreciation of a car is usually the greatest during the initial two years. As such, when you buy a car that has already been in use for two to three years, the seller must necessarily discount the price with at least 30 – 60 % of a new car to account for the depreciation. Thirdly, the 2 or 3 year old car should also have a low mileage since the mileage is what indicates the level of usage depreciation. The higher the mileage, the lower the asking price.

Fourthly, remember that your choice of preowned cars is motivated by the need to minimize the initial expense of owning a car. The word minimize here is key, since most people seek cars at throw away price just because they are preowned. Ideally, you should seek for a high quality car at a minimal price and not just any car at the lowest price. What is sold at a thrown away price is fit for throwing away. So, aim at minimizing the cost and not decimating it since the price of an asset is almost always equivalent to its value/quality.

Further, seek for preowned cars that are still covered by the factory warranty and which will continue being covered for a while longer. If the preowned car is still within coverage of the warranty, you stand a rare chance of having the car replaced or serviced if a major mechanical and functional error develops. If does not play out, you will still have an opportunity to have the car serviced to perfection if need be. This is also important since the car with a valid warranty has been used for a minimal time and has a potential for being in better shape than those without.

The sixth and perhaps the most important tip of them all is that you should always buy a certified car that has already passed an inspection carried out by a vetted and trained technician. Major manufacturers usually conduct certified programs to provide their dealers with certified pre-owned models of their vehicles. Such vehicles must necessarily meet very strict requirements for them to be included by the manufacturer in the program. For all the certified vehicles, manufacturers provide additional warranty to a new buyer as part of the purchase deal.

The idea in buying preowned cars is to reduce expenses of buying a new car but still getting a high quality car in pristine condition. This is what you must seek for during the purchase process of a preowned car.

San Diego Auto Insurance Tips

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

More and more people are looking to trim down their expenses these days. However, one expense that cannot be neglected is that of San Diego auto insurance. If you live in Southern California you know premiums for Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego auto insurance have been shooting up over a period of time. People are therefore looking for ways to keep them low and save some money. How can they do that?

There are a number of ways that a person can use to keep their premiums low. Most people start by making an attempt to find lower quotes for the insurance they want. However, this could be a difficult task when you look at all the requirements that insurers may demand, before you are offered lower premiums. Insurers take a number of factors into consideration before an offer is made. You would do well to consider these factors before you send out your application for a quote.

If you are looking to lower your premiums, consider the following points and make them available to the insurer. These points will definitely help you get lower quotes on the premiums you may have to pay. For one, do you have a safe parking space for your vehicle? Parking your vehicle on the road leaves t open to attacks by outside elements. However, if you have a storage place for the vehicle, you will get better offers from the San Diego insurers.

What is the mileage you intend to use the vehicle for ever year? Give the insurers an estimate about this. If you can show them that you intend to clock lesser mileage, you will stand to benefit. Insurers understand that you also make use of public transport and will use the vehicle only for basic needs. Finally do not forget to attend a safe driving course and provide the insurance company with the certification provided. This will show them that you understand the importance of safe driving and will not be a hazard on the road.

Give the San Diego insurance company every point that shows you in positive light. This is one way of getting them to offer you good prices.

Know Your Car Window Deflectors

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Weather always plays a spoil sport through wet and miserable situations. This will tend to the air inside the car stale quickly. This can be controlled well through side window deflectors. These deflectors are also known as vent visors too. Mainly window deflectors will create a pocket of air between the top of the window and the deflector. This pocket will work as a low pressure area and successful in suctioning the stale air from car interior.

Window deflectors create another advantage to roll down the windows to little height during any kind of weather situations. Fresh air can be enjoyed well though it is raining or snowing. Sometimes every car will creep up heat inside while parked and this can be prevented through window deflectors successfully. These window deflectors are made of indestructible high impact acrylic. These are lightly tinted in reducing the sun glare. Installation of window deflectors is quite easy, simple and quick.

The Secret of the Cheap Car Lease

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

To get a nice new Camry, Malibu or Altima at $499 a month is terribly tempting; there’s something about the number that no one can resist. There was even a recent review in the New York Times of a Honda Accord that went for a $199 a month (with additional money for the upfront payment, tax and license). It attracted appropriate sighs of longing and disbelief too. So is there anything about the situation to not feel wonderful about? Well, there’s nothing at all, if your credit rating fairly sparkles (and if there was a credit card bill you accidentally paid a day late 10 months ago, you could already be out of the running). You wouldn’t qualify for a temptingly cheap car lease offer otherwise. This is a great deal of course; but how do you go into that dealership and come out with a car you want, and not a brushoff?

The whole car lease idea has been in hibernation for a couple of years now. When gas prices rose to four dollars a gallon, droves of people terminated the leases on SUVs, and right away the car makers found themselves stuck with fleets of used SUVs with no market value. They were so stunned by this whole debacle that they swore off leasing altogether; until now, that is. Obtaining a lease though isn’t going to be as easy as it was anymore. You don’t just show up with proof of what you made over the last three months and get your car lease. The automakers are putting out car leases again on the market; but they are extremely careful over whom they will give the lease to. It is this kind of careful scrutiny for a guaranteed dependable customer that makes a $199 car lease possible.

Another reason this is possible is that people are buying more used cars now than new ones. When used cars are expensive, it makes depreciation on new cars really small; if the depreciation each year is tiny, they only need to take a tiny payment from you to cover it – that’s the $199 you pay. And finally, there is the real reason why they let you drive it off for $199. The lease contract estimates that you will drive very little – about 12,000 miles each year for three years. You’ll have to pay a higher mileage allowance after that. And of course, don’t forget that you don’t own this car; at the end of three years, you’d better be willing to drive the car back to the dealership, and just walk off. If you bought the car, you would have an asset.

Going up to the dealer to get yourself a new car lease, it might be difficult to actually walk away if the deal doesn’t materialize, It is easy to consider paying more for a car with more options, a bigger engine, and a poorer deal. You need to understand that the greatest hand you hold in a car negotiation is that you can resist the sales pitch, and walk away. You’re there to do yourself a favor, not one for the dealer. There are plenty of certified pre-owned vehicles on the market; you could get better financing for used cars too, because the manufacturers who keep stocks of used cars are anxious to let them go. And these are better deals than signing a car lease any day.

Banks determine the way we buy cars after the recession according to the CEO of Associated Motor Holdings

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

The banks have recently slowly started to extend more loans to consumers who have used the recent spate of low interest rate to clear their debt and establish a more solid financial foundation. Used car financing registrations increased with an average of 16% in the first two months of 2010, which was almost double that compared to the new car market. And with zero inflation in the new car market buyers are choosing “nearly new” over brand new. The largest demand has been in the R50 000 to R150 000 segment, where consumers are finding that used cars offer better value than new cars. In this segment the monthly repayments take up a large part of the family budget and consumers are looking for the best value they can find. Used cars offer them a change to own a car with more power, more space, more accessories and more luxury than the choices offered to them in the same price bracket on new car dealers’ floor. Old Car for Sale

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

My friend from a small town near New York tried to put her 2003 Saturn on the market herself with ads in the classifieds recently. The most unpleasantness that she expected to come across was a couple of buyers who haggled too hard. It turned out her old car for sale ad opened her eyes to a whole new side to society she had never known about – perverts, weirdos and con-artists. There was one who offered to pay her more than she asked for, if he could pick up the car in 15 minutes. His request (and the accent) sounded so much like the terrorists behind the Times Square car bomb that she quickly hung up. In the end, her old car fetched her $7500, about $2000 more than what the dealer offered her.

Buying or selling an old car through a private party transaction rather than through a business, is often an invitation to criminal types to come and have a go at the opportunity. When you try to buy a car through a private transaction, you could get people selling you cars that have had all the good parts stripped out and substituted with bad ones, you could have a car with the odometer rolled back, the ownership papers forged, and you could have kerbstoning – where the dealer comes trying to sell you a car while he pretends he’s an individual seller.

And if you are offering an old car for sale, you could have a phony check or one that bounces. You could also have the Nigeria scam pulled on you trying to sell a car. They mail you a fake certified check for twice the price you are charging, tell you that they made a mistake, and ask you to wire back to them the excess cash. The hope is that you’ll send them the cash even before your bank tries to collect on the check and finds out that the check is fake.

Yet another common situation involves the fake escrow. An escrow service is a mediating party. They take money from a buyer and hold on to it until he tells them that he’s satisfied with the goods he has received, and puts out his okay for the release of the money to the seller. You’ll see a lot of this in real estate and Internet selling. When you try to sell a car, buyers can come up with a fake escrow service though ; the service will tell you that it has received payment for the car when it hasn’t. And when you let the car buyer drive it away, you realize that there is no payment and no escrow service.

Some bad things can happen when you take the DIY approach to posting an old car for sale. But your savings can be pretty good too when things go smoothly; most of the time, they do. Let’s look at how to avoid some of the worst things that can happen when you grow your own.

1. Make sure that you don’t call the buyer home; if he happens to be a criminal, you will end up setting yourself squarely in his sights. And wherever you go to sell a car, make sure that you bring a friend along who is noted for his strength.

2. Make sure that you pick your own escrow service, so that you can avoid fraudulent ones.

3. Before you actually let the car go, make sure that all the documentation is in order.

According to the law, any old car for sale that actually gets sold needs to be reported to the DMV and the insurance company. Several states allow you a release of liability – so that should the buyer hit somebody with the car you sold him, right after the sale, you can prove that the car should not be counted as yours in the event of an accident. The fact that you can detach yourself from anything that happens to your car once it leaves your possession, is something that wins a lot of car owners a great deal of peace mind.

Used Car Buying Tips

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

The used car market isn’t of a mind to be kind to buyers now. If you happen to be in the market for a used car right about now, finding one is harder and pricing it to go is harder still – all thanks to the way car owners in the country are hanging on to their old cars for longer than ever (the new car market has been has been hands-down the worst the carmakers have ever had too). You don’t even get much of a choice in used cars these days. It’s been slim pickings ever since car owners decided to not trade in for a while. If you want to put a figure on it, each year now ever since the recession started, used car dealers around the country have been seeing their inventory drop by about 3 million cars a year – as compared to what it used to be like before the recession started. It’s just that a lot of us who would have been heading to a car dealership for a new car have just been lining up with the less than well-off to get an old car. That’s twice as much pressure on the used car circuit – fewer trade-ins, and more customers. What you need right now to compete with all these buyers on the market is a way to understand the market in a way the others don’t. These used car buying tips then are just for you.

A friend of mine in LA needed a good-looking car that would not look cheap and make him look bad; but he had no more than $7000 to spend; he found on Craigslist a dealer who specializes in used cars obtained from movie sets. These are the cars you see in the movies parked along the street in the background. He got a five-year-old luxury Lincoln for his price, and it was thousands of dollars less than what the Kelly Blue Book said it was worth. It pays to get a little creative. Now, if you don’t feel like going out of your way like this, there are still some pretty good deals to be had in a market like this. Consider the compact car for instance. One of the best used car buying tips for now would be to consider a compact. When gas prices hit four dollars a couple of years ago, manufacturers came back by suspending SUV production and putting everything they had into compact cars. When gas prices fell, manufacturers were slow to respond; for that reason, you have your pick of the lot when it comes to small cars. And with so much small car inventory in little demand now, a purchase like this is primed for the bargain hunter.

There is another side to that deal too: manufacturers cut production on SUVs two years ago; but with low gas prices such as there are now, SUVs are in demand again. Used car prices on SUVs are at an all-time high now. To begin your search, begin online on AutoTrader.com or Cars.com to get the lay of the land – how much they cost, what level of wear you will have to put up with, the options included, the vehicle identification number (the one that help you check to see if car is as clear as he thought it was). You could easily look everything up at these sites. Once you follow these used car buying tips and go to a dealer armed with all the information you need, prices included, you have all you need to drive a hard bargain. The most important piece of information that can arm you for the fight will be information on similar cars in other locations within 1000 miles. If you can walk into a dealership and throw that in his face, that should offer real leverage.

If for instance, if it is a convertible that interests you, looking all the way over in California might make sense. Convertibles are plentiful over there, and you could probably get a great deal. Whatever you buy, make sure you see the car for yourself, and that you hire a certifying inspector to give the vehicle a once over. You’ll find them on Carfax.com or eBay Motors. If you want to have someone ship the car over to you, try TransportReviews.
