One place on the VW beetle that has a potential for rust forming besides underneath the battery is in the heater channels.
Since this area is forced hot air, over time with all the condensation buildup during the cooling off period causes moisture.
And with nowhere for the water droplets to go it will start to rust.
Get underneath the car if you can and really look around following the heater channels. Since it’s a little hard to explain in words it would really be worth your time to find an exploded view diagram of the VW bug year you are interested in and know exactly where to look.
